Citrus briefs

Tommy Schultz picture of Calimansis• Jim Hofman, the indoor garden guy, is hot on calamondin oranges (or as we say out here in the Western Pacific and the Philippines -- calamansi) for the indoor citrus farm. They're tart but with a distinct almost lemony flavor -- unlimited uses. They do like a lot of direct light, though. -- Link

• The tipping point came somewhere in the mid-80's. More than 75% of the OJ swallowed in North America is now of the ready-to-drink variety. About 25% of us cheapskates have remained loyal to the frozen concentrate products originally developed in 1945. (Although this week we're drinking the past-date Western Family Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice that we found on the bargain shelf -- still tastes great.) -- Link
